Chapter Eighteen

Kay tried her best to hurry Fran across the street to Discovery. She had seen Tommy Rayne coming out of his shop and hoped to God he wouldn’t spot her. Why hadn’t they just gotten there a little later? Or earlier, even? She was beginning to wonder why she’d given in when Fran insisted on tagging along. If the night was headed where she hoped it was—where Brenda’s suggestive phone call the night before indicated it would go—she didn’t want Fran hanging around. At least she’d had the foresight to make Fran drive. That way, if Brenda did want to spend the night with her, they wouldn’t have to drive two cars.

“Hey, you fucking bitch!” she heard Rayne call out. Fran stopped to turn around.

“Come on, let’s just keep going,” Kay pleaded quietly, a hand on her elbow in an attempt to get Fran moving again. “Ignore him.”

“What’s the matter? You’re not so tough when your partner isn’t around to back you up?” he called out. His hands went behind his head and began scratching feverishly between his shoulder blades.

“That’s him?” Fran asked, but she still wouldn’t move, despite Kay’s plea to do so. Kay nodded, and Fran looked as if she were going to yell back at him. Kay yanked on her arm hard enough to force her to move and practically dragged her into the bar where the band was already playing. “What an ugly little man. Why doesn’t he wear an eye patch, for God’s sake? He’d even repulse a blind person.”

“Because he doesn’t give a shit about what anyone thinks of him,” Kay said. “And I don’t want to spend the evening thinking about him. I have other things on my mind tonight.”

“I’m sure you do.” Fran grinned at her as Kay paid the cover charge for them both.

“Get your mind out of the gutter.”

“What the hell was that thing he was doing?” Fran asked as they made their way to a table near the front. She put her hands behind her neck and simulated scratching between her shoulder blades. It appeared she wasn’t quite ready to drop the subject of Tommy Rayne. “Was he scratching? Does the man have fleas?”

“Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. I don’t think the man’s showered since nineteen eighty-three.” Kay pulled out a chair and sat, her eyes meeting Brenda’s almost immediately. She smiled when Brenda nodded once in her direction before turning her concentration back to her drums.

“So has the mystery woman shown up yet?” Dana asked as they made their way to the bar when they ended the first set.

“She’s here,” Brenda said. The bartender, Carol, started to get her a soda, which was Brenda’s usual choice while they were playing, but Brenda shook her head adamantly before reaching across the bar to grab Carol’s arm. She proceeded to order a beer.

She’d never been much of a drinker, but she’d been nervous as hell since the phone call the night before. She knew without a doubt where this night was headed, and she was ready for it.
